“Ugly” Plums & Great Stories

A hidden farm in Londonderry is the Merrill Farm. We spent some time with Bill Merrill this week while he was out working at his open air farm stand. The original idea was to pick up some peaches and peppers, the order quickly turned into a few more items and a lot more conversation. After selecting the attractive “fuzzy” peaches farm owner William Merrill now in his 80’s, pushed the plums. “Those plums are the best you will find” remarked Mr. Merrill. We had to reply without hesitation (that would have been more appropriate), “But they are “ugly” plums.” Looking up through his glasses, he sternly remarked, “that may be so but they are still the best you will find!” As if we thought we could make up for the insult we ordered a few pounds to go with the attractive peaches. The corn by his elbow, it looked fresh picked, we added that too. The two weeks of no rain in Londonderry had been taking it’s tole on the crop, these looked plump and full by the bulk an bulge of the husks.
